Come out and ride a scenic and enjoyable brevet with the club! This is Mike Moerk’s breathtaking Indy 200 route – from Buena Vista to Aspen and back, climbing the spectacular Independence Pass, from both directions!
We will meet at Columbine Park in downtown Buena Vista (park where you can – but not at City Market!) and head north on the rolling, wide shoulder of 24. A single left turn towards Twin Lakes is all the navigation you need to do. From this point, it is a lovely journey up and over the 12,095′ pass and then down into the swanky town of Aspen. Take a breather, grab a bite to eat, get your card signed at any business here, and then start the serious work of climbing Independence Pass from the west. Once you reach the crest for the second time, the hard work is done for the day; you will have climbed about 9,000′ and can enjoy the mostly downhill trip back to Buena Vista. This is a nice event for a first timer, because it is both beautiful and low-key. We will probably ride in a group to the base of the climb, have lunch together in Aspen, and most of the work is done by mile 85. A frugal alternative to the Triple Bypass (being run simultaneously), this is an easy opener into the world of brevets.
As we will be up at altitude and above tree line mid-day, come prepared for Colorado’s unpredictable weather with a rain jacket, warm gloves, and knee warmers at a minimum. I have gotten snowed on riding Independence Pass in the middle of summer!
Come out and join us for a day of verdant vistas and challenging climbing. This is about a two hour drive from the Dinosaur Lots just off I-70. I would recommend using this site to set up a carpool for anyone interested in going.
